Ben Gunter Awarded Spring 2013 Dramaturg Driven Grant

The Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA) is pleased to announce that Ben Gunter is the recipient of the Spring 2013 Dramaturg Driven Grant.

Ben Gunter is driving Theater with a Mission’s quest to translate and field-test Lope’s (small) New World. Like a cross between The Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr (abridged) and a living-history excursion into Spain’s Siglo de Oro, Ben's work in 2013 to condense a play from 1599 has the aim to lure listeners across language barriers, insinuate dramaturgical context into performance text, and excite audience participation, as it explores Florida’s Native American and colonial Spanish roots through the eyes of history’s most prolific playwright, Lope de Vega. The volunteer dramaturgs, designers, actors, and community activists who make up Theater with a Mission (a member unit of Florida Living History, Inc.) are making Lope’s (small) New World their contribution to Viva Florida 500, the official commemoration of five centuries of Columbian exchange in the Sunshine State (1513-2013). With help from LMDA, the project will be seen in Tallahassee and St. Augustine – and has even been invited to perform for ATHE in Orlando.
