Chicago Conference 2003
The 2003 LMDA conference, labeled ‘Turgs in the Hood, was held from June 26th-29th in Chicago, IL. The theme of border crossings – how we as dramaturges cross borders and how the work itself crosses borders – was explored throughout the weekend. The conference opened with a tour of Chicago theatres and a keynote speech given by Chicago director Chuck Smith. Other highlights included a case studies session on crossing collaborative borders, a presentation of telephone monologues written specifically for the conference, a talk on pursuing dramaturgy in Hollywood, and breakout sessions on diversifying the profession, text, and audience.
Members were also taken on a bus tour of Chicago, where they had an opportunity to meet with artistic directors and representatives from the Neofuturists (in Andersonville), Chicago Dramatists (in Wicker Park), ETA Creative Arts (in South Chicago), Court Theatre (in Hyde Park), and Chicago Shakespeare (on Navy Pier).
