LMDA Prize in Dramaturgy - Elliot Hayes Award

The LMDA Prize in Dramaturgy awards $500 in recognition of exemplary contributions by dramaturgs to the conception, development and production of theatre or to educational projects in dramaturgy in the Americas since February 15, 2000.

Named in honor of Elliott Hayes, the former dramaturg and literary manager at The Stratford Festival and a dual citizen of Canada and the USA, this award recognizes excellence in dramaturgical work on a specific project; and projects may include, but are not limited to: productions, publications, season planning and implementation, educational programs or advocacy for the profession.

More information can be found on the Elliot Hayes Award page.

The Mixed Blood Theatre Company seeks proposals for its second annual DRAMATURG DRIVEN project.

The Mixed Blood Theatre Company tackles contemporary works that address artificial barriers to people succeeding in American society, historically manifest in terms of race, culture, language, disability, nationality, gender and sexual orientation.

Submissions should be consistent with the organization's mission, and can be either an idea that process that leads to an artistic project OR an existent product that merits continued development.

Inaugurated in 2003 by Bill of W)Rights, an ambitious 24-actor, 9-playwright, 9-stage political theatrical extravaganza that was the brainchild of Guthrie Literary Director Michael Bigelow Dixon, DRAMATURG DRIVEN is an attempt to discover new ways of finding and/or creating original work for production on Mixed Blood’s mainstage in particular and for the American theatre in general.

Applicants are encouraged to

  • Reinvent form
  • Reexamine the relationship between dramaturgs, writers, and theatres
  • Break the rules
  • Extrapolate the theatre’s mission

Mixed Blood intends to advance the chosen proposals through to production at the theatre and will share other worthy proposals with colleagues in the National New Play Network.
