Director of Inclusion, Queens Theatre

Date posted: August 27, 2018

Flushing Meadow, Queens, NY

Queens Theatre, a vibrant performing arts center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, is seeking a Director of Inclusion. Queens Theatre has long been a welcoming institution, bringing visibility to artists from underrepresented communities and providing cross-cultural experiences to audience members in a diverse borough. Wanting to go further, we created this important new position.  The Director of Inclusion will develop and lead comprehensive efforts to prioritize inclusion in all aspects of Queens Theatre’s work – operationally, programmatically, etc.

The Director of Inclusion will:

Connect the work with the community.  Examine the programming we have planned for our 30th Anniversary season, identifying individuals, organizations and communities for whom the work might be particularly meaningful, and develop effective ways of engaging with them.

Manage the Theatre For All Initiative, a multi-faceted program to increase the inclusion of people with disabilities in the performing arts, which includes a training program for early career professional actors with disabilities, an education program for children, increased accessibility services at Queens Theatre, and multiple projects working with artists and technicians with disabilities.

Develop Queens Theatre’s first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Plan, with Queens Theatre leadership, and manage the implementation of this plan.

Represent Queens Theatre. Share and learn from peer institutions with similar missions and values. Meet with our peers, participate in convenings and read pertinent studies. Stay actively and broadly involved, informed, and engaged.

Develop New Initiatives, designed to broadly and deeply serve the diverse communities in Queens.

Promote values internally. Support an internal staff culture of inclusiveness and professional development, assisting in onboarding of new staff members, including temporary staff members, and supporting inter-departmental coordination on initiatives.

Keep our history. As Queens Theatre continues to evolve and to learn, document our processes and growth and communicate both internally and externally.

The Director of Inclusion will report directly to – and work closely with – the Executive Director. The Director of Inclusion will manage a community outreach team including a Community Outreach Coordinator as well as seasonal interns.

The right candidate will be a strong and thoughtful communicator (orally and in writing) and an experienced manager who thrives in a fast-paced environment, and demonstrates the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.  This individual will seek out opportunities to learn, and will find working in a diverse community interesting and energizing. As this is a new position, this person will have an opportunity to evolve the position itself, in response to the needs that they discover.

The position is full time, exempt, with primarily weekday day-time hours. Some nights and weekends will be required.

Queens Theatre is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment and is proud to be an equal employment opportunity employer.  We are committed to equal employment opportunity in the workplace regardless of age, gender and gender identity, race/ethnicity, disability, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or veteran status.

Position starts immediately. Salary is $50,000 plus extensive benefits.

Please submit a resume and cover letter to jobs@queenstheatre.org with '[Your Name] - Director of Inclusion' in the subject line.
