Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts, SUNY New Paltz

The State University of New York at New Paltz’s Department of Theatre Arts invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Theatre Studies beginning in the 2020-2021 academic year. This is a full-time, tenure track, 10 month, academic-year position.
The Department of Theatre Arts has approximately 180 majors and 50 minors enrolled in its programs. The department offers a BA in Theatre with concentrations in Performance, Design/Tech, and Theatre Studies.

A successful candidate will have made steps towards a national and/or international reputation as a practitioner and/or scholar and be prepared to teach courses with a firm rooting in global theatre history, theory, dramatic literature and performance studies at the undergraduate level. They will also have a record of scholarly research and/or creative activity, teaching, institutional service, and collaboration with other artists and/or scholars. Typically, department faculty teach three courses per semester with a course release opportunity for participation in departmental productions. Faculty also participate in advising, curriculum assessment and development, and engage in other service duties for the department, school, and the college.

Qualifications

MFA or PhD degree in Theatre or Performance Studies, conferred no later than June 1, 2020, is required. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in Latinx Theatre, Asian & Asian American Theatre, African Diaspora & African American Theatre, Middle Eastern Theatre, or LGBTQ+ Theatre although other specializations wil l be considered. Applicants must have a research agenda that will support and enhance the diversity of the Theatre Department and the Theatre Studies curriculum and students. Additional preference will be given to candidates that can participate as a dramaturg or director in the Mainstage and Praxis Series productions of the department. Previous teaching experience is preferred.
