Founded in 1960, the University Theatre presents 3 mainstage productions and 1 studio show each year, and graduates 10-15 BA Theatre majors annually, in performance, production, theatre studies, and education concentrations. SPU Theatre draws widely from the Seattle theatre community for adjunct instructors and guest artists who bring their expertise to our students. Recent alums are working for most of the theatre companies in the Seattle area, teaching theatre in high schools across the region, and pursuing careers and graduate education around the world. The theatre department is committed to equity and inclusion as a learning outcome which enhances the education of all students by increasing their awareness of historical and present inequities and developing tools of cultural respect and broad social responsibility. Job Description:Seattle Pacific University's Department of Theatre seeks a passionate and experienced theatre educator to join our community of artists. We care deeply about making excellent theatre while caring about and for each other. We seek someone who will, with us, welcome and include all people, drawing on every one's knowledge and experiences of the world, working for equity and justice in our classrooms, on our stages, and in our lives. We expect this educator to focus on analysis, history, writing, literature, and theory in a liberal arts environment where we are all strengthened as artists and as people by learning and teaching beyond our narrow specialties. Teaching load is 10-12 credits per quarter and includes course release for production work.Teaching:Analyzing & Interpreting Theatre; Theatre Literature & Theory; Dramaturgy; History of Theatre I & II;Disciplinary Writing for general education students;Collaboratively teaching Theatre as Vocation and Theatre Capstone;Other theatre courses (performance, education, or production courses) as negotiated and matching experience and interest.Production:Direct at least one mainstage production;Coach and supervise student directors and dramaturgs as needed;Contribute to annual season selection process.Service:Academic and vocational advising of students, particularly in Theatre Studies;Supervise student projects in directing and dramaturgy;Involvement in program assessment, management, and leadership as appropriate. Requirements:PhD in Theatre History, Performance Studies, or related fieldMinimum 5 years' university teaching and advising experienceUniversity directing experienceAbility and willingness to teach disciplinary writing for general education studentsGeneralist training, experience, and attitudeCommitment to excellent learning and teaching with students from a range of cultural, ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgroundsCommitment to the University's ecumenical Christian missionPreferred Qualifications: Professional directing experienceDirecting and teaching experience in youth theatre and/or theatre for young audiencesHistory of advising, directing, and teaching students from underrepresented groupsSkills for teaching courses in theatre performance, production, and/or education Salary:Nine month salary commensurate with training and experience.
