Position Summary

Tenure Track, Assistant Professor of Dramaturgy

Indiana University Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance seeks a professional dramaturg with evidence of an emerging national profile in Dramaturgy for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank. This position will design and lead a new MFA track in Dramaturgy recruiting students in 2019-2020 for an inaugural class in the fall of 2020.

The ideal candidate is experienced and actively working professionally on classical texts, new works, devised and applied theatre. Work with contemporary dance is desirable.

Position requires a faculty member who is an energetic, engaged and enthusiastic colleague ready to contribute to the intellectual life of our department.

The department upholds the standard that a dramaturg is a key member of an artistic team. This position will be expected to demonstrate the rigor and responsibility that this entails. Tenure track expectations include ongoing creative activity in dramaturgy in the profession. Peer reviewed publication in the industry can be considered in addition to creative activity to form an artist/scholar profile. Continued engagement with professional organizations such as LMDA, ATHE, ASTR are expected and service to the profession is highly desirable.

Position responsibilities include:
1. Curriculum development and standards of the new MFA track in Dramaturgy in collaboration with members of the Playwriting faculty, History, Theatre, and Literature faculty, and Department Chair. Maintain courses that reflect current practice in the industry.
2. Teach an annual course load of 4 three-credit courses during a 10-month academic year.
3. Mentor graduate dramaturg assignments on the mainstage season.
4. The Department Staff Dramaturg is also assigned to dramaturg on the season and advise undergraduate dramaturgs on the season.
5. Recruit graduate students for the MFA program and, in collaboration with the staff dramaturg and department faculty, help cultivate an active interest and participation among undergraduate students in dramaturgy and community engagement.
6. Serve on Departmental Committees at the discretion of the Chairperson
7. Work alongside our Staff Dramaturg to determine season assignments for student dramaturgs
8. Dramaturg one Main Stage production a season
9. Promote the Department and Program in the industry
