Position Summary

PlayMakers’ Associate Artistic Director’s (AAD) primary responsibility is to advance and facilitate the artistic vision of the theatre in conjunction with the Producing Artistic Director (PAD). The AAD will work with the Producing Artistic Director to ensure the artistic quality of PlayMakers’ programming, and will act in the Producing Artistic Director’s stead when requested. The Associate Artistic Director will work to serve the needs of the resident company while identifying local, regional and national artists who will advance the mission of the theatre. This includes developing relationships and seeing the work of University and artistic organizations in the area. The AAD, in conjunction with the AP, will oversee all casting efforts for the theatre in collaboration with the theatre’s casting office in New York as well as with the resident company of actors, undergraduates, and artists in the wider region. The AAD has a significant advisory role to the Producing Artistic Director in programming and will work with the artistic team to read and/or identify potential titles to produce in PlayMakers seasons. This includes maintaining direct relationships with playwrights, producers and literary agents in solicitation of new work. The AAD will direct one show in PRC’s season (either on the main stage or in the Playmakers Repertory Conservatory series (PRC2) as well as one show with Performing Arts Dramatic Theatre students or the Summer Youth Conservatory show each year. The AAD supervises the artistic team in producing the Mellon Ensembles Initiative, the New Play Festival as well as other special artistic programming as assigned, such as, but not limited to, workshops and readings of local, regional and national artists. The AAD collaborates with the Development and Marketing Departments by contributing artistic content for both long term strategy and day-to-day actions surrounding grants and other fundraising efforts, as well as marketing initiatives as they connect to the public portrayal of PlayMakers. The AAD may teach in the Department of Dramatic Arts as requested.

 

Educational Requirements

A Master’s degree is required.

 

Qualifications and Experience

A minimum of two years experience in theatre administration. The ability to communicate effectively and collaboratively with individuals from a broad spectrum of socio-economic backgrounds and education levels. Must demonstrate the ability to successfully manage multiple diverse projects simultaneously. Ability to manage and communicate project budgets.
