LMDA's Northwest region is a vast and varied area comprising Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Northern California, and Alaska.  Due to the great distance between states, LMDA members in Northern California meet in a variety of locations across many cities.  Seattle is the home of Seattle Repertory Theatre, ACT Theatre, Intiman, Seattle Children's Theatre, and dozens of mid-size and smaller theatres, as well as Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet, and many other dance and performance groups.  Portland is home to Portland's Centers for the Arts, Portland Center Stage, Artists Repertory Theatre, and Third Rail Repertory Theatre, among many others.  Ashland, OR is the home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

The NW region and its theatre artists are served by two strong theatre service organizations, Theatre Puget Sound in Seattle and Portland Area Theatre Alliance in Portland, and by numerous colleges and universities devoted to training theatre and performing artists, including University of Washington, University of Puget Sound, Cornish College of the Arts, University of Oregon, and Southern Oregon University.  The Pacific Northwest is home to a burgeoning number of freelance theatre and performing artists, some of whom recently re-launched the former Seattle Fringe Fest as a way for aspiring and independent artists to present new work.  Regional LMDA events have alternated between the major cities in the region, including Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, and Ashland, and are often co-sponsored by the universities listed above.  These events are typically aimed at bringing dramaturgs together with directors, playwrights, producers, designers, and other theatre and performance artists, to foster collaboration, networking, and new work.
