The Public Theater is seeking a senior professional with a track record of working with playwrights of the highest quality to partner with Artistic Director Oskar Eustis to develop new work for the Public. 

We are seeking a leader in the field with at least ten years of experience who will help us continue the Public Theater’s rich legacy of artistically innovative and socially concerned theater, a legacy which includes For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf, The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel, That Championship Season, Father Comes Home from the Wars, and The Normal Heart, among many others.

The professional in this position will oversee a Literary Manager and a Literary Associate and will report to the Artistic Director.   This individual will have the ability to implement new strategies within the department and will oversee its processes to ensure its success.  He or she will also oversee the Literary Department’s budget. 

In addition to developing a robust pipeline of new work for The Public, this individual will also oversee new play development which currently includes

  • A commissioning program
  • New Work Now! (a free reading series that allows audiences an opportunity to experience new work by a diverse selection of established and emerging theater artists)
  • a large roster of internal readings and workshops, residencies,
  • Fellowships and other programs.

    This role also oversee the Emerging Writers Group which is managed by the Literary Manager.

    Requirements:  At least 10 years of work with theater artists in a professional setting.  The successful candidate will have managed staff and budgets and have ongoing and productive relationships with writers and agents, an intimate knowledge of the field, and the ability to travel regularly to cover work across country, and a passion for the Public Theater’s mission.
