Topic: “Back to School Night with PlayPenn”
LMDA’s Case Study and Conversation returns with “Back to School with PlayPenn”, featuring Michele Volansky (Associate Artistic Director) and Julia Bumke (Director of Education), to discuss PlayPenn. PlayPenn, now in is in its 15th year, is an artist-driven organization dedicated to improving the way in which new plays are developed. In their 15 year history, PlayPenn has developed over 140 new plays, with nearly 60% of these plays going on to more than 350 professional productions at esteemed institutions across the globe. Volansky and Bumke will discuss the work done locally in Philadelphia through the annual Conference and the 3-year residency program, The Foundry, as well as the national outreach to close to 250 writers from around the globe via the education program. With a mission to develop both plays and writers through the lens of dramaturgy and text, Volansky and Bumke will share their thoughts on how PlayPenn lives that promise.

This is an event geared towards Freelancers, as we’re continuing our series from last year to focus on “Best Practices at New Play Development Centers”. So far in this series, we’ve discussed Best Practices with artists at Seven Devils, Jewish Plays Project, the Public Theatre—and now PlayPenn. We’re inviting freelancers to come prepared to ask questions of the different organizations we’re featuring, although all LMDA members are welcome to attend and participate. Also, we are responding to our membership requests to schedule these events at different times of day than lunchtime, because #realtalk—many of us work multiple jobs.
