Position Overview
David Geffen School of Drama (DGSD) at Yale University seeks an experienced and dynamic performing arts professional and teacher to join a pre-eminent MFA program in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism.
The Geffen School, in partnership with Yale Repertory Theatre (YRT), trains and advances leaders in the practice of every theatrical discipline, making art to inspire joy, empathy, and understanding in the world. The faculty member in the Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism program reports to the Chair of the program, while supervising all activities of, teaching classes in, and serving as mentor to MFA and DFA students of, the program.
Job Description
This individual, reporting to the Chair of the Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism Program at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale (DGSD), will teach classes in at least three diverse fields from among the following areas: theatre history, translation, critical writing, dramaturgy, and non-Western drama, and, as a member of the Department Faculty, will have the following responsibilities:
Responsibilities
Teaching and Mentoring
- Teach four semester-long courses annually in theatre history, translation, critical writing, dramaturgy, and seminars in non-Western theatre in the candidate’s area of specialization.
- Advise MFA dramaturgy students in matters concerning academic progress, comprehensive examinations, and professional development.
- Sit on doctoral students’ dissertation committees, where appropriate.
Program Administration
- Support the Chair in maintaining a dynamic curriculum and class schedule.
- Participate in all department meetings.
- Participate in discussions to select lecturers, visiting faculty, and workshop leaders.
- Participate in the admissions process: selecting each incoming class, including, but not limited to, reading applications and conducting interviews.
- Perform other related duties as requested by Chair.
Interaction with Yale Repertory Theatre
- Where appropriate, the faculty member may be asked to serve in an advisory capacity to the Yale Repertory Theatre artistic office or as production dramaturg at the YRT.
Rank and Term of Appointment
The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor Adjunct or Professor in the Practice, commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience, for a term of no less than three years beginning July 1, 2026, renewable, and includes competitive salary with full faculty benefits. Minimum salary: $105,000.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- At least seven years’ experience teaching, preferably at the graduate and doctoral level
- Extensive publication record
- Experience in mentoring
- DFA or PhD in the field of Drama or Performance required
Traits and Attributes
- Track record of artistry, scholarship, teaching, and/or service contributing to the culture of heterogeneity in the Geffen School
- Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills
- Ability to work effectively and flexibly with a large number of staff, students, interns, and others
- Excellent communication skills, strategic thinking, prioritization, time management, problem solving, and kindness
- Preferred: Experience as a professional theater practitioner and in graduate conservatory training
