We are looking for our newest team member and collaborator: a lover of the arts with a background in arts administration or event producing who relishes the opportunity to work for a values-aligned organization.
As the HowlRound associate producer, you will work closely with the creative producer and the rest of the team to support the operations of HowlRound’s online projects and in-person gatherings. You will help us engage our community more deeply, both locally and globally. You will help shape the trajectory of our work and the organization itself.
HowlRound was founded in 2011, and we’re still evolving! We are a dedicated and passionate staff of six based in the Office of the Arts at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Emerson College is internationally recognized as the nation’s premier institution of higher learning devoted to communication and the arts.
Position Summary
The associate producer reports to the creative producer and will provide producing support for all HowlRound programs, including the HowlRound’s digital publishing platform (the Journal, HowlRound TV, and Podcasts), the National Playwright Residency Program, in-person convenings, and the Advisory Council. This is an important role that requires a driven, detail-oriented collaborator.
This is a hybrid role with expected days in the office each week. Candidates must reside within—or be willing to relocate to—a reasonable commuting distance of Emerson’s Boston campus.
Essential Job Duties:
- Support management of the National Playwright Residency Program (NPRP) through line producing in-person residencies. Administer the program funds to cohort members and manage quarterly cohort communications
- Support line producing and execution of convenings and in-person events through planning meetings and organizing with convening partners and stakeholders, participant communication, agenda and timeline execution. Provide continued support after the gatherings through participant communications, post-convening survey creation and management, and convening evaluation
- Support the management of HowlRound’s ongoing field organizing initiatives, such the International Presenting Commons (IPC), through scheduling regular meetings, sending follow-up communication, notetaking, and project management
- Support the HowlRound Journal through managing communications with contributors to the HowlRound platform, including creating and coding contracts and tracking calendar deadlines for articles and author payment status
- Schedule and organize regular communication with the HowlRound Advisory Council
- Manage HowlRound student workers and occasional project overhires
- Participate in Office of the Arts staff-wide initiatives, including but not limited to staff retreats, staff meetings, and racial and climate justice initiatives
- Represent HowlRound at international, national, and local events as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Required Skills and Experience:
- Working knowledge of and/or deep appreciation for the transformative power of theatre and performance
- 3-5 years in the arts or the nonprofit sector, including experience producing theatre, conferences, and/or other live events
- Experience working in an administrative capacity
- Alignment with HowlRound’s core values and commitment to anti-racism and advancing equity in the workplace
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks and projects
- Excellent organizational, administrative, time management, and prioritization skills
- Organized, detail-oriented, computer-proficient, and adaptable
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Working knowledge and understanding of HowlRound’s place in the theatre landscape
- Knowledge of and passion for commons-based approaches
- Experience working in a complex administrative environment
- Experience facilitating events, meetings, and groups of people in a collaborative process
- Experience creating budgets and managing expenses to budgets
- Passion for new play development and working with artists to achieve their vision
- Experience providing content direction

Salary and Benefits
