Theatre director, dramaturg and artistic associate
Biography
Tal Basson is an Israeli based theatre director, dramaturg, translator and artistic associate with extensive experience in repertory theatre management and artistic programming, complemented by a consistent practice in independent theatre-making. Formerly the head of the artistic department at Be’er Sheva Theatre, and artistic associate to artistic director Shir Goldberg, he specialized in seasonal curation and new play development. Today, he continues to shape the theatrical landscape as an active member of the theatre’s artistic committee.

He holds a B.Ed.F.A (Summa cum laude) in Theatre Directing and Education from the Kibbutzim College of the Arts. During his studies, he examined the work of Russian director Yevgeny Vakhtangov and his "Fantastic Realism" synthesis between psychological truth and stylized form— inquiring into the role of music in Vakhtangov's landmark 1922 production of 'The Dybbuk'. Building upon this, his investigation expanded into the Dionysian force as a structural element in drama, concepts that continue to inform his search for an effective dramatic architecture across his practice as both director and dramaturg.

Upon graduating in 2023, he was awarded the Sefi Rivlin National Award for excellence in comedy directing and the Ohala Halevi Scholarship for political writing and directing. In addition, he was selected for the international excellence program 'On the Incense Route', a collaboration with the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg, Germany, focusing on the intersection of journey and memory through cross-media storytelling.

His debut work, 'Watch Me, Follow My Lead' (2023), premiered at the Tmuna Festival and was subsequently integrated into the theatre's permanent repertoire. In this critically acclaimed work, he co-adapted with Mor Hasan the contemporary novel 'Flying Tiger' into a four-actress stage adaptation directed by him, exploring gender themes and complexities within family relations in the patriarchal Israeli society.

In 2025, his work in directing moved to major national stages; this includes his most recent work 'Back Home', which he co-wrote and directed with Matan Deri-Badash for the Khan Theatre in Jerusalem, and 'Best Friends', directed by him for the Goodman Theatre in Be'er Sheva. As a dramaturg, his practice also expanded into contemporary dance with the production 'Gold' (dir. Yael Polka) premiered at the Acre International Fringe Festival.
