Biography
Faedra Chatard Carpenter is a freelance dramaturg and the Maya Brin Professor of New Performance in the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. As a former resident dramaturg for Arena Stage and Crossroads Theatre Company, Carpenter has worked as a freelance dramaturg for a number of companies in the DMV, among them: The Folger Theater, Ford's Theatre, Mosaic Theatre Company, Theater J, The Kennedy Center, The African Continuum Theatre Company, and Baltimore Center Stage. Her interests include the study of race, sexuality, and gender in contemporary performance, and she has published work in many scholarly venues such as The Routledge Companion to Dramaturgy, The Cambridge Companion to African American Theatre, LMDA Review, Theatre Topics, Women & Performance, Text and Performance Quarterly, and Callaloo. She is the author of COLORING WHITENESS: ACTS OF CRITIQUE IN BLACK PERFORMANCE and is currently working on manuscripts addressing aquatic performances and Black dramaturgy.
