Biography
Gabriel Greene joined La Jolla Playhouse’s artistic staff in 2007, and currently serves as their Director of Artistic Development. In addition to overseeing their commissioning program and curating/producing the annual DNA New Work Series, he has dramaturged more than three dozen new plays and musicals, including Joe DiPietro and David Bryan's DIANA and MEMPHIS (also Broadway and London; four Tony Awards including Best Musical), Lindsey Ferrentino's THE YEAR TO COME, Robert Askins' THE SQUIRRELS, Rachel Bonds' AT THE OLD PLACE, Hansol Jung's WILD GOOSE DREAMS, Quiara Alegria Hudes and Erin McKeown's MISS YOU LIKE HELL, Ayad Akhtar's JUNK and THE WHO & THE WHAT, Michael Benjamin Washington's BLUEPRINTS TO FREEDOM, Robert Lopez and Kristin Anderson-Lopez's UP HERE, Herbert Siguenza's EL HENRY, Des McAnuff and The Flaming Lips’ YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS, Aditi Brennan Kapil’s BRAHMAN/I, Kirsten Greenidge’s MILK LIKE SUGAR (off-Broadway transfer; Obie Award) and Claudia Shear’s RESTORATION (off-Broadway transfer).
With Alex Levy, Gabe co-wrote SAFE AT HOME, a site-specific play designed to be performed inside a baseball stadium. It received its world premiere at Mixed Blood Theatre in March 2017 (Ivey Award), and has since been produced by Arizona State University, Kitchen Dog Theatre (Best Theater Production of 2023, D Magazine) and University of Houston. Gabe also co-wrote (with Tom Salamon) GOOSEBUMPS ALIVE, an immersive, adult adaptation of R.L. Stine's bestselling novels; it premiered at The Vaults (London) in 2016.
A Chicago native, Gabe previously served as Literary Manager for Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where he co-adapted I SING AMERICA (performed at Millennium Park). Other dramaturgy: UC San Diego’s Wagner New Play Festival (eleven years), Steppenwolf, New York Stage and Film, New York Theatre Workshop, South Coast Rep’s Pacific Playwrights Festival and TimeLine Theatre, among others. He worked with UC San Diego professor Samuel Popkin on his books THE CANDIDATE: WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN -- AND HOLD -- THE WHITE HOUSE (Oxford University Press; Editors' Pick, New York Times Book Review) and CRACKUP: THE REPUBLICAN IMPLOSION AND THE FUTURE OF PRESIDENTIAL POLITICS (Oxford University Press).
