Biography
Stephen is a dramaturg and director based in Vancouver and originally from Newfoundland. His dramaturgical practice is rooted in Shakespeare and classical texts, adaptation, and new play development. He has been the Associate Director at Theatre Newfoundland Labrador, the Artistic Director of Rumble Theatre (Vancouver) and is currently in charge of New Works and Professional Engagement at the Arts Club Theatre Company.
Notable dramaturgy projects include: "Indian Arm" (Hiro Kanagawa, recipient of the Governor General's Literary Award for Drama), "The Society for the Destitute presents Titus Bouffonius" (Colleen Murphy), "Redbone Coonhound" (Amy Lee Lavoie and Omari Newton), "Medea" (Carmen Aguirre), "Forgiveness" (Hiro Kanagawa), "The Cull" (Michele Riml and Michael St. John Smith), "Blackfly" (Amy Lee Lavoie and Omari Newton), "Harlem Duet" and "Julius Caesar" (production dramaturg, Bard on the Beach), and "Romeo and Juliet" (production dramaturg, Ballet BC).
He holds a BFA from Memorial University, an MFA (Directing) from the University of British Columbia, and an MA (Theatre Theory and Dramaturgy) from the University of Ottawa. His research on contemporary Shakespeare adaptation process analysis was recently published in Shakespeare Bulletin.
He sits on the Board of Directors for LMDA Canada.
