Biography
Steve Capra is a dramaturg and theatre writer living in New York City. His first book, "Theater Voices", includes contains with leaders in the British and American theaters, including Edward Albee, Harold Prince, Sir Peter Hall, Sir Alan Ayckbourn and many others. His second book, "Stage Voices: Interviews with 28 Theater Directors Worldwide", contains interviews with Nicholas Hytner, Richard Eyre, Ivo van Hove, Krystian Lupa and many others.
His plays have been produced in New York and the UK. He’s been a finalist in The Bordighera Poetry Prize Competition (for his verse drama), The Tennessee Williams Short Play Competition, The American Globe Theater Festival (NYC) and The New Venture Theatre Festival (UK). His critical writing has appeared in theater journals including Stage Directions, Critical Stages, Performing Arts Resources, Sinais de Cena (Portugal), and Divadelni Noviny (Czech Republic). Steve has produced and directed several OOB and regional productions. He’s worked with many theater companies, including work as a series producer for Judith Malina and the Living Theater. He’s also worked as an actor with several companies, including The Living Theater and Bread and Puppet Theater.
Steve’s training includes Michael Shurtleff, HB Studio, The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and The Actors Centre, London. He’s a member of The Dramatists Guild, The Theatre Library Association and The American Theatre Critics Association. He holds advanced degrees from New York University, Long Island University and University of Massachusetts, and he’s active in the Freedom of Expression community.
