Apprenticeships at Hartford Stage
The apprenticeship program is designed to provide valuable on-the-job instruction for recent college graduates and early career theatre professionals. Apprentices will enjoy close working relationships with experienced staff, and meaningful hands-on work opportunities. In addition to being immersed in their departments, our apprentices participate in seminars lead by different departments in the theatre, a Networking Day in New York City and organized social activities. Apprenticeships are available in the following departments: Artistic, Arts Administration, Company Management, Costumes, Development, Education, Electrics, Marketing, Production Management, Props and Technical/Scenic. Apprentices are provided with a weekly stipend of $100 and free housing and parking in downtown Hartford within walking distance to the theatre, rehearsal spaces and administrative offices. Housing includes a private bedroom in a shared townhouse with cable, internet, laundry facilities, linens, and basic kitchen set-up. Apprenticeships serve as a training ground for future colleagues in the American Theatre. Some current and former Hartford Stage staff members began as apprentices and were promoted to staff positions. You can find former Hartford Stage apprentices across the country continuing their education and/or working at the following organizations: ArtWest Playhouse, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Reno Little Theatre, Cortland Rep, Fort Worth Opera, Huntington Theatre, Long Wharf Theatre, Milwaukee Rep Theatre, Northern Stage, Playwrights Horizons, Universal Studios, Williamstown Theatre Festival and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
The Artistic Apprentices will work with the artistic department in fulfilling the artistic mission and vision of the organization. Duties may include: tracking and reading script submissions; conducting research in support of production dramaturgs and directors; assisting with casting; supporting resident and visiting directors during pre-production, the rehearsal period as well as tech and previews; and day-to-day operations, including both administrative and producing tasks. There may be opportunities in assistant directing and dramaturgy. Ideal candidates will have a degree in theatre, experience working in professional theatre and a strong desire to pursue a career in directing, dramaturgy &/or producing. Writing sample must be submitted with resume in order to be considered for the position. The Artistic department hires two apprentices each season. Hartford Stage is dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse and equitable environment and strongly encourages applications from minorities and women.
Other apprenticeships are available in the categories of Arts Administration, Costume, Development, Education, Electrics, Marketing & Communications, Production/Company Management, Properties, and Technical/Scenic.
