The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of
Director, Cultural Affairs.

The Community: Bordering Southeast Florida's Atlantic coastline, Broward County is the eighteenth most populous county in the nation and the second largest in Florida. It is located between Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties, forming the heart of Florida's largest metropolitan area in which 5.6 million people reside. Within the county's 1,224 square miles are 31 municipalities, the largest of which is Fort Lauderdale. Nearly two-thirds of the county is part of the undeveloped Everglades conservation area. Broward County boasts more than 23 miles of pristine Atlantic coastline, and its beaches attract both the local population as well as tourists from around the world. With an average year-round temperature of 77 degrees, Broward County has a tropical climate and is a choice destination for over 14 million visitors every year.

Broward County's warm climate, demographic diversity, robust and expanding economy, myriad of housing options, excellent schools, state-of-the art healthcare and an advanced transportation system afford its residents an exceptional quality of life.  Broward offers world-famous fine dining, theater, nightlife and shopping venues, as well as an abundance of recreational activities like golf, deep sea fishing, boating and unlimited opportunities for fun on the beach. The state's second largest public school district is located in Broward County, providing excellent primary and secondary education. In addition, there are many prestigious local and regional colleges and universities offering excellent higher education opportunities.

The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is a part of Broward County and most major cruise lines operate out of Broward County's Port Everglades, ranked second among cruise ports worldwide. Among Broward's abundant retail shopping options is Sawgrass Mills, the largest one-story shopping mall in the United States. For the sports enthusiast, Broward is home to the NHL's Florida Panthers, while other major sports teams, like the Miami Heat, the Miami Marlins, and the Miami Dolphins, are just a short drive away.

The Opportunity: The County seeks a Director of the Cultural Division to work with staff and the community as an advocate for arts and culture.   Reporting directly to the Deputy County Administrator, the Director manages a staff of 18, an annual operating budget of $9M, plus additional an $5-7M in capital appropriations for public art (depending on the annual capital budget) and will have a powerful voice in shaping the strategic direction of the Cultural Division.

The Director will deepen the Division's  existing partnerships and pioneer new enterprises, collaborating with community groups, nonprofits, schools, private industry, foundations and cultural organizations across the county, region and nationally. The Director will be charged with substantively increasing access to and improving arts programming and services, proactively striving to create opportunities for the County. A transformational leader, the Director will offer creative ideas to adapt, strengthen, and when appropriate, diversify the Division's programs and partnerships to address the changing needs of the community.

The Ideal Candidate: The successful candidate will be an accomplished executive with knowledge of the role of the arts in public and community life, have experience in executive level arts administration  and knowledge of major cultural institutions and arts organizations. This individual must be a forward thinking, business minded leader who is/will be actively involved in the community and has the ability to build relationships with public/private partnerships, nonprofits and community leaders.   The successful candidates should have strong interpersonal skills, exceptional organizational and administrative skills, a collaborative working style, and a demonstrated knowledge of and passion for the arts.  He/She must have the capacity and interest to be an effective mentor and supportive leader for staff; demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with, and present to, executive level staff and elected officials; and be able to clearly articulate complex information succinctly.  Advanced written and oral communication skills will be imperative. Relevant knowledge regarding the Arts in Broward County is highly desirable.

Education and Experience: Requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in arts administration or closely related field; Master's degree preferred. Requires six (6) years in arts management including four (4) years high level supervisory and administrative experience or closely related experience.   
 
Compensation: The annual salary range is $92,696.91 - $147,944.05 and will be based on the knowledge and experience of the individual selected.  The State of Florida does not have a state income tax.
