The Department of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies at Brown seeks applications for an open rank (tenure track/tenured) position in playwriting. The successful applicant will envision and advance the future direction of Brown’s nationally renowned playwriting programs, which consist of a top-ranking MFA program and a robust undergraduate curriculum in writing for performance. Responsibilities will include curriculum development, teaching graduate and undergraduate playwriting courses, helping to produce the annual graduate playwriting festival, and mentoring both graduate and undergraduate students in curricular and co-curricular activities germane to their professional, intellectual, and creative development. This position will also entail opportunities to contribute to the Department’s annual production season, such as directing or having their work produced in the departmental season. We welcome candidates whose work engages a diverse range of aesthetic traditions, styles, and forms of writing for performance. Experience creating and/or producing new work, as well as teaching playwriting or related genres of writing for performance at the university level, is also desirable. We seek a candidate who will share the Department’s commitment to cultural and artistic diversity, and to the integration of theory and practice in the context of a vibrantly interdisciplinary liberal arts curriculum.

Junior candidates should have a record of professional activity and research that demonstrates their ability to influence the field and shows their potential for excellence in teaching. Senior candidates will have an established record of artistic achievement and demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and advising.

Application Instructions

All candidates will submit a cover letter showing interest in the position (which should include a statement of teaching philosophy), a CV, and a dramatic writing sample (max 20 pages).  Candidates applying as Assistant Professors will submit three letters of recommendation, and senior or already-tenured candidates should submit contact information for five references.  Candidates will be notified before references are contacted.
