Position Summary:

The Department Chair is responsible to their respective Dean for the general management and operation of their academic areas. 

The Chair represents their department(s) to the Dean and university administrators, supports faculty in their professional development, and works with faculty to improve instructional programs and to develop programs that are responsive to changing needs of students.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Department Chair is a tenure track faculty appointment as an Associate or Full Professor and is responsible for evaluating and recommending faculty members to the dean of their college for employment, retention, promotion, tenure, non-renewal, and dismissal

Preparation and administration of budgets for the departments

Supervision of the academic advisement of students majoring in the department

Acquisition, use and care of departmental equipment

Encouraging and sustaining scholarship, research, and participation in professional activities by members of their faculty

Supervise other personnel in the department

Coordinating curricular development; strategic planning; outreach and recruitment; alumni, audience and donor relations; and facility oversight, and service activities while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in teaching

The standard teaching load for department chairs is two classes per academic semester

Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required or applicable to the position responsibilities and area of specialization, including special abilities.

General Days/Hours:

Monday - Friday
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Additional hours as requested and/or needed
Regular and reliable attendance

Other:

Expected to hold office hours; participate in department and university activities and service; and conduct creative or scholarly research

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:
Must possess a Ph.D. or MFA in Theatre or related field.

Demonstrated directing experience in the theatre with a variety of plays and musicals.

Preferred:
Possess demonstrated strength in teaching in their specialty as well as general education courses. 

Experience at the university level, and a record of artistic and/or scholarly endeavors that meets the University’s standards for a tenured appointment at the rank of Full or Associate Professor. 

Will bring appreciation and respect for the unique contributions of members of the theatre department and be committed to fostering an educational and work environment that supports the University's commitment to diversity and inclusion. 

Experience in playwriting or arts management a plus.
